SP Automotive multimeter 300500

New to the site but may be some one can provide the answer.
I have recently changed the battery on my multimeter 300500.(which was working perfectly) soon as I turn the dial to operate, the screen momentarily flashes 18888 then goes blank. If in direct sunlight (??) it holds this figure on the screen. The unit will not operate normally.
ideas please. I have had this unit for years and has never given any problem until now.
I live and work in Cyprus and there does not seem to be a SP agent/supplier out here.
Looking forward to your suggestions.
regards
Gregg

Re: SP Automotive multimeter 300500

As the meter worked ok before the battery change, i suspect a faulty replacement battery. I have some rechargeable one,s but are no good for that type of work

Re: SP Automotive multimeter 300500

Hi Dennis, thanks for your quick response.
I too thought this was the problem, however I have tried three different batteries with the same result unfortunatley.
I think I will have to send it to SP to see if they can resolve this.  I have found this tool invaluble over the years and to replace with similar would be very expensive.
Thanks once again
Gregg

Re: SP Automotive multimeter 300500

Hi Gregg,

The 300500, if it has been used to test current on a battery, will fail. This was a common issue that they were never intended to test huge current loads. If you unscrew the meter and look at the shunt check that the PCB tracking is still intact, if not then resoldering this can sometimes fix them, otherwise you will have to speak to Sykes Pickavant returns as this was not a product manufactured in the UK by the R&D Centre in Melksham.

Hope this helps.

Winston
